In a world where unforeseen emergencies can strike at any moment, being equipped with the necessary knowledge and tools to prevent and mitigate disasters is paramount.
Recognizing this need, St. Paul University San Miguel conducted a seminar in collaboration with the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP). It served as a platform for fostering a culture of safety and resilience within the Paulinian community.
One such disaster that requires vigilant preparation is fire. The BFP from San Miguel provides an insightful seminar aimed at educating the Paulinian community about the fundamentals of fire prevention and response. Led by Fire Officer 1, Ms. Rochelle DC Cuevo, the seminar delved into crucial aspects of fire behavior, classification, and extinguishing techniques, empowering Paulinians with valuable knowledge to safeguard not only their lives but also individuals within the community. Our grade school pupils actively participated in lively discussions and were able to perform “Stop, Drop, and Roll”, a simple fire technique and effective way usually taught to children to suppress fire from their clothes. Moreover, the three basic elements of fire: Fuel, Oxygen and Heat were exemplified by grade school students filled with enthusiasm and commitment to perform properly the tasks at hand.
In addition to fire safety, the seminar addressed basic disaster awareness and emergency preparedness, with insights provided by Mr. Ryan Jeffrey Santos, Security Officer II from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO). Participants gained an understanding of the country's risk profile, categorizing hazards, calamities, and disasters, and learned proactive measures to mitigate these risks.
SPUSM upholds the value of being PRAYERFUL, emphasizing the importance of following His holy will as our purpose and mission as children that imitate the goodness of God through embracing our responsibilities with TRANQUIL - DARING, that continuously serve others beyond our capacity. This event fosters a sense of willingness to contribute to the final good of the community but remains SELF-EFFACING– equipping the Paulinians to mitigate fire risks and positively contribute in nurturing the environment. ALL TO ALL, the Paulinian community, rooted deeply in our faith, exemplifies the dominance of a diverse and inclusive society in building a preventive and vigilant community.
Overall, the seminar provided a thorough platform for promoting a culture of safety and resilience in the community. Attendees are better equipped to cope with and minimize the numerous challenges that arise from fires and other disasters by imparting knowledge, practical skills, and a prepared mindset, assuring everyone's safety and well-being. Remember, in the face of emergencies, remaining calm, thinking critically, and acting decisively can make all the difference.
