On April 11th, a significant cybersecurity training took place at St. Paul University at San Miguel bringing together the ASEAN team which explored this field under the theme, “CYBERSECURITY: Solidifying Bridges of Tomorrow’s Digital Footprint”.
The event was geared towards strengthening our digital defenses as we increasingly integrate our lives with technology. The training was initiated with the opening remarks of Mr. Jose C. Lazaro Jr., who emphasized the critical need for a strong cybersecurity framework to safeguard our digital future. The session started with the "Internet of Things” (IoT), where Mr. Judiel Ibabao and Ms. Mhikel San Roque delved into the widespread use of IoT devices across our daily lives and their potential security weaknesses.
As the event continued, the speakers from the BSBA ASEAN team (Alelie Lazaro, Precious Hannah Lei Viduez, Ruth Ingal, and Joanna De Guzman) delve on the various forms of cyber attacks. Starting from the “Cyber Spying” which was discussed by Ms. Lazaro, detailing how it works and gets the confidential and sensitive data of an individual or organization. Subsequently, Ms. Viudez underscores how traditional spying has adapted in the digital realm known as “Espionage” and offers strategies to prevent this kind of cyber threats. Ransomware, another form of cyber attack, was elaborated by Ms. Ingal, explaining its mechanics and how it affects both enterprises and individuals.
Ms. De Guzman explored the most common cyber threats but not widely known for the term “Cyber Defamation”. She discussed the legal and social impacts of Defamation in today's era of digital communication, especially the active users of social media. The speaker also emphasizes that unknowingly, students performed defamation through the act of spreading false information and sharing private images, videos and screenshots, which can be manipulated and is allegedly attested to harm a person's or group's reputation or character in the public.
Concluding the day, Ms. Kensly Ligon spoke on "Cyber Hygiene and Cyber Governance," stressing the importance of regular updates, strong passwords, and continuous education about potential threats. She also highlighted how the culture of cybersecurity awareness is essential in safeguarding digital information and assets.
As the boundaries between our digital and physical worlds continue to blur, such conferences are crucial. They serve to educate and spur collective action towards a secure digital future. This training lays down a solid foundation for businesses, governments, and individuals to strengthen their defenses, preparing us to confidently tackle the cybersecurity challenges that lies ahead.
